The introductory phase focuses on teaching communication skills in Japanese and English, information processing skills, and presentation skills. Students study multiple foundational subjects under different majors.
These courses teach the communication skills (Japanese, English, digital) needed to succeed in specific communities. The Japanese courses focus on the writing and speaking skills needed to express oneself well. The English courses teach English as a useful tool through a campus-wide program on English as a lingua franca (ELF). Students also learn the presentation and computer skills needed to gather, analyze, organize, and communicate information using multimedia materials.
New students take part in group projects on community themes in which they learn how to proceed with a project through experiences with conceptualization, execution, and promotion. Training locations vary between Hakone, Shizuoka, Yokohama, and other sites.
Students in these courses learn statistics and other research fundamentals while also taking introductory courses overviews from seven majors. (Examples include Japanese history, Japanese language, philosophy, religious studies, sociology, psychology, and international relations.)
